There may be no more unique place to lodge in the Kailua-Kona/Keauhou Bay area than Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village. Set on 16 landscaped acres within a golf course, Holua’s villa-style units have several distinctive features.
Every unit is housed in a blue-roofed pod (building) with between five and 10 total units, according to size. Each pod is octagonal in shape and offers various one- and two-bedroom floor plans that are not square, but refreshingly spacious. Vibrant colors beckon the eye and the senses in a very striking, yet spirited manner. The furnishings and appointments are first-rate and evoke an island sensibility.
Holua Resort is also one of the very few condo properties in Hawaii where you park in a community lot (half of which is covered) rather than close to your unit’s front door. Needless to say, the resulting quietude throughout the pods and grounds is well worth a few extra steps. It is truly a "Quiet Village".
The resort, which has recently been extensively renovated, features extremely lush tropical plantings and waterscapes as well as eight pools, eight jet-spas and five lighted tennis courts. Each unit features fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryer, private lanai, air-conditioning, in-room safe, multiple TVs, video player, stereo and daily maid service.
Because Holua is gaining a positive reputation and following, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find availability, so I recommend booking as quickly as possible. If there is no availability on or about your desired dates, try Holua’s sister property, the Kona Coast Resort, which also delivers an equally high-quality product.

Kona Coast Resort

One of the finest lodging properties in the Kailua-Kona/Keauhou Bay area, the Kona Coast Resort is conveniently located at the entrance to the Keauhou Bay district and just across from the Keauhou Shopping Village.
Always in impeccable condition, this sprawling condo complex has a Phase I and Phase II that house their spacious and fashionable one- and two-bedroom units. Every unit has air-conditioning, fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryer, in-room safe, private lanai and daily maid service. What really sets Kona Coast Phase II apart from other properties are its gourmet-style kitchens and exotic baths, all featuring ceramic, marble and/or granite amidst substantial square footage. ALLHawaii.com always requests Phase II for our clients, but Phase I is no slouch, with even larger units and some better views from locations on the bluffs.
The resort boasts two pools, three jet-spas, tennis courts, gym, full-service spa, barbeque areas, on-site activities, putting green and the best restaurant in the Kailua-Kona/Keauhou Bay area. In fact, the restaurant and bar, which sits just above and adjacent to the Phase II pool, is so good and reasonably priced that it must be enjoyed several times during any Big Island visit.
Due to its excellent reputation and quality, availability is getting harder and harder to come by at Kona Coast Resort, so book if you find the space. If there is no availability on or about your desired dates, try Kona Coast’s sister property, Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village, which delivers an equally impressive product.

Aston Shores at Waikoloa

Here’s a lodging option where value, location and quality all conspire to deliver a marvelous Hawaii vacation experience. Sitting in the midst of the Waikoloa Beach Resort, Aston Shores at Waikoloa is one of the preeminent condo developments on the Big Island. It features one- and two-bedroom villas in 4 three-story elevator buildings.
Managed by Aston in their usual on-point and immaculate style, The Shores’ units are spacious and very nicely appointed, each with unique furnishings. Every unit is air-conditioned, with full kitchens and washer/dryer. The complex has a delightful pool and jet-spa in a central location. Most of the views are of the golf course variety as the Waikoloa Beach Resort’s “Beach” Course sits alongside. In fact, just a few steps past the front gate you’ll find the Beach Clubhouse and the Beach Grill, one of the most affordable restaurants on the Kohala Coast serving lunch and dinner. Try my favorite, the Calamari Steak Sandwich or Dinner for a real treat.
The Waikoloa Beach Resort offers a plethora of things to do and see, with a petroglyph (rock carvings) trail, ancient heiau’s, lava flows, rocky inlets, two golf courses and the Kings’ Shops (and restaurants), just to name a few.
If you’re looking to settle in for a real relaxing vacation with lots of space, fine housekeeping and a host of low-key amenities, you can’t go wrong at Aston Shores at Waikoloa.

Aston Kona by the Sea

The ASTON Kona-by-the-Sea is a relaxed oceanfront resort on the Kona Coast about 5 miles south from the town of Kailua-Kona on Hawaii (The Big Island). Recent enhancement projects in the lobby, the pool area and to the outside of the building have all been completed as of October 4th, 2004. This exterior project followed close behind the previous interior re-decoration of all units to reflect a casual Hawaiian style. All of these very spacious suites have ocean views with generous sized lanais offering a great spot to enjoy the spectacular sunsets. The resort is "by-the-sea" in three acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, and the palm trees sway in the gentle ocean breezes of the Kona Coast.
