For those who are not familiar with the layout of the Princeville Resort on Kauai’s stunning North Shore, beachfront lodging doesn’t really exist. Instead, accommodations, especially those with any type of ocean view, are perched on dynamic cliffs about 165 feet above the Pacific. Welcome to The Cliffs at Princeville, where the name really tells the story.
The Cliffs at Princeville is a three-story condominium complex where one-bedroom units predominate. For families or three persons sharing, third-floor “One-Bedroom with Loft” units have a large loft bedroom, most with two queen beds, and there is a second bath on the main floor. Fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryer, multiple lanais and pleasing appointments make The Cliffs a solid choice for those seeking space, comfort and affordability.
Four tennis courts, a pool, jet-spa, barbeque area and putting green adorn the property. However, there is an anomaly that must be considered and remembered. Check-in takes place about 20 miles south at the Kauai Coast Resort behind the Coconut Marketplace in Wailua. There, guests pick up welcome packets that include, keys, maps and registration items. Since you must pass the Kauai Coast Resort and Coconut Marketplace on your way from the airport to the North Shore, it is not out of your way, but you certainly don’t want to drive up to Princeville first.

Castle Lanikai Resort
Beachfront Condominium
Less than a mile north of the mouth of the Wailua River and a short walk to the Coconut Marketplace is a sensuous cove with a crescent-shaped white sand beach. Not coincidently, there resides the area's best beach for sunning and swimming. Even more good news—it is home to Castle Lanikai Resort, a condo enclave that boasts exceptionally large mostly two-bedroom units in a very private setting.
With only 18 units, Lanikai is certainly not a vast complex, but while small in scope, there is much to be said for the delightful spaciousness, lovely decor and premium condition of each unit and of the premises, in general. Being so close to the Coconut Marketplace also provides a unique opportunity to stretch out and walk to dining, shopping and cinema options. Of course, its central location to all things on Kauai makes this one of the best lodging locations on the Garden Isle.
Each Lanikai unit offers either an ocean view or oceanfront view with full kitchen, washer/dryer, lanai and terrific beachfront access. Air conditioning and daily maid service is NOT available. Even though prices are a little high, for two couples sharing, it can also be a pretty good value.

Castle Kaha Lani
Ocean Front Condominium
In Hawaiian, Kaha Lani means "heavenly place" and Aston Kaha Lani has a heavenly location. Splendidly isolated from other developments, this deluxe condominium enclave resides amidst lush tropical landscaping and miles of un-crowded white sand beach just 5 miles north of the Lihue Airport.
In addition to the quietude and privacy of this secluded beachfront property, spacious one- and two-bedroom units are mostly parallel to the ocean and about as close as you can get to the surf. Therefore, every Kaha Lani suite is oceanfront or ocean view.
Set up for easy, modern living with daily maid service, units include full kitchens, ceiling fans (no air-conditioning), VCRs and large lanais with sweeping sunrise and ocean vistas. Scenic Lydgate Park also abuts the property, with acres and acres of green space, beach and great recreational equipment for kids. Dining, shopping, and entertainment are just minutes away in Wailua, Kapaa, Lihue and Kalapaki Bay.
As with many condos, each unit is unique in terms of furnishings and appointments and at Kaha Lani they can vary quite a bit. So, while it is a terrific property for families and those looking for a really good deal, it may not be the right choice for honeymooners and those looking for a bit more upscale digs. Recently, the small inventory, combined with a strong demand, has made it difficult to reserve space. If you find it, grab it quick. It may not be there tomorrow.

Aston at Poipu Kai
Condominium Resort
On a prodigious parcel of land near the ocean in sunny Poipu, you’ll find Kauai’s largest condominium complex, with over 350 units. Aston at Poipu Kai’s five regions of buildings are interspersed around 70-110 acres, according to whose PR is accurate. The only similarity between the regions and units is that they are all large and professionally maintained and presented.
Most of the year, Poipu Kai is a very good value when compared to other Poipu lodging options. With six pools and jet-spas, a tennis center with nine lighted courts and pro shop, and nice proximity to golf and all ocean sports, there is hardly a better place to stay for the active sports enthusiast.
The spacious Poipu Kai units are always immaculate, well stocked in the bed department and cooled by ceiling fans with good ventilation rather than air conditioning. Fully equipped kitchens and large lanais round out the presentation. The vast majority of units are of the Garden View variety with a two-bedroom Ocean View also in the mix. Poipu Kai is a very good choice for families.

Waimea Plantation Cottages
Oceanfront Plantation-style Resort
On Kauai’s west side is one of the most unique and enjoyable places to stay in the Aloha state. Waimea Plantation Cottages is adjacent to the bustling western-style town of Waimea and at the gateway to the spectacular and renowned attraction, Waimea Canyon (aka the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”).
Originally, sugar plantation workers’ homes, the 50 cottages found on these 27-oceanside acres amidst hundreds of coconut trees, and some impressive displays of banyan trees, are both historic and comfortable. The fully restored one-, two-, three- and even four-bedroom cottages, while still evoking rural Hawaiiana and a certain rustic flair, feature lots of space and large porches/lanais. The appointments include wood floors and period furniture of mahogany, koa and wicker. Contemporary amenities include full kitchens, ceiling fans, in-room safe, cable TV and stereos. No two cottages are alike and each is separate and sufficiently spread out. Aston Hawaii and its astute and personable GM, Paul Schow, add a deft touch that makes the property sparkle.
For all intents and purposes, Waimea Plantation Cottages is a full-fledged resort. Two beachfront pools (one for all and one for the kiddies), tennis court, volleyball, croquet, hammocks and a black sand “walking” beach adorns the grounds. The real white sand beaches are about a half-mile in each direction with the beach to the north of the entrance to Waimea Canyon offering one of the longest expanses of white sand in Hawaii. Waimea Plantation Cottages is also in Waimea, with its myriad of shops, galleries and eateries.
The on-site Waimea Brewing Company offers excellent microbrews and fun food treats from a substantial menu at the gathering place under the palms. The "BrewPub" features traditional pub fare with a creative multi-ethnic "plantation" flare.
Combining three to five nights at Waimea Plantation Cottages, with five to seven nights on Kauai’s Coconut (East) Coast, is an engaging scenario for a creative Kauai vacation.
