Castle Waimea Country Lodge
Country Lodge/Hotel

If you're not a beach person and interested in seeing the Big Island from the inside out rather than the outside in, the Waimea Country Lodge is a terrific find.

Located at 2,500 feet above sea level in the upcountry village of Kamuela-Waimea (on the Big Island they like their towns so much they give them two names), the Lodge was built in 1976 and renovated in 1998. It is really what most of us call a motel, but with the feel of a lodge. The rooms all have scenic mountain views, are very large, nicely appointed and some have mini-kitchenettes. Air conditioning is unnecessary in the rarified air of Waimea, so all the rooms have fans or ceiling fans.

One of the joys of lodging at the Waimea Country Lodge is the location. Waimea is a town with a diverse population and is the center of operations for the world’s largest working ranch—The Parker Ranch. It also has three of the finest restaurants on the Big Island (Merriman’s, Edelweiss and Thibault’s), a host of other eateries, as well as shops and galleries, all within a couple of minutes by foot.

From Waimea, it is easy to take the “Scenic Highway” to the hidden treasures of the Big Island’s North Shore (Hawi/Pololu Lookout), Saddle Road (Mauna Kea Observatory), Kailua-Kona and its environs, the fascinating Hamakua Coast, with its various distinctive waterfalls, and even Hilo (about 75 minutes away). Four or five nights at the Waimea Country Lodge combined with two or three nights in Hilo or Volcano Village will really engross the non-beach/ocean-from-afar traveler. And you’ll save more than a few bucks!
