Deluxe | Premium | Luxury Maui Prince Hotel, Makena Resort South Maui Beachfront Resort Hotel The hands-down choice for affordable elegance in a high-quality beachfront resort hotel in south Maui is the Maui Prince Hotel, Makena Resort. Among the many things I can recommend about this fine hotel, is its location just past the Wailea Resort on 1,800 acres that comprise the Makena Resort. Since it is at the southern edge of the resort areas, the Maui Prince is by far the most private and pristine of south Maui's beachfront hotels. It resides on an unspoiled white-sand beach at the base of Haleakala, the dormant volcanic giant. The open “V”-shaped hotel, with some sort of ocean view from most every room (or at least from the private lanais), is built around and among an open air atrium that features a Japanese meditation garden complete with stone walkways, streams teaming with koi fish, waterfalls and quiet contemplation areas. The roof is the sky. The door of every room opens to the atrium, while the windows and lanai look out toward the ocean. In addition to the quietude of its location, clever juxtaposition to the Pacific, breathtaking sunsets and the natural beauty of the volcanic landscape of Makena, the Maui Prince offers a host of amenities and attractions. Not just ocean views are available from the beach and rooms, but vistas of west Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe and Mokokini, the tip of a volcano just barely emerging above the waves a couple of miles offshore. In fact, you can take the hotel’s 47-foot catamaran to snorkel there. The restaurants are particularly good and have snagged a number of culinary awards. The Prince Court’s extensive wine list is a winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for depth and creativity. Two of Maui’s best golf courses and a first rate tennis facility are also on-property. With 310 rooms, the Maui Prince is the smallest of the five major hotels in the area, which keeps the service first-rate and the feel far more intimate. Rooms are well appointed and use native woods for a nice a Hawaiian flair. All the hotel rooms are virtually the same with the views improving as categories move up. For a great resort experience, don’t miss the Maui Prince, Makena Resort.
